Sibos 26: the three Rs of payments

Institutional Insights

The key themes of Sibos 2026 can be boiled down into three Rs, according to ANZ’s Global Head of FIG, Mark Harding: real time, rails and resilience.

Speaking on video as the 2026 Sibos financial services conference wrapped up in Miami, Harding said there had been a handful of consistent themes from attendees at the conference, starting with the ongoing rise of real-time treasury.

“Real time is the first R,” he said. “It's about real-time payments, real-time liquidity and real-time data. And it's about being able to move things faster across systems and the networks.

“The second R is about rails. Tokenised deposits have been a big topic of discussion.”

The final R was resilience, Harding said, as financial services groups remain eager to “deal with counterparties [they] trust", with security front of mind for all in the sector.

Harding made the comments in conversation with Jenny Hutchings, ANZ’s GM, TB Financial Services. Both were at Sibos as part of an ANZ delegation engaging with the bank’s customers, global peers and others at the event. You can watch the video below to find out more.

Hutchings said her two key takeaways from Sibos had been focussed around “delivery” and “digital”.

ANZ’s live transaction across the SWIFT Scheme, which included a payment from a China-based remitter processed through ANZ to a beneficiary at another financial institution, all while on stage at Sibos in less than 30 seconds, was a key example of the group delivering for its customers, Hutchings said.

And the ongoing growth of digital assets was on display, according to Hutchings, in ANZ’s announcement it had helped complete one of the first live corporate treasury transactions using tokenised deposits.

On September 28, the world’s premier financial services conference brought the best minds in payments together in one place: Miami, USA.

ANZ experts were among thousands of attendees sharing the newest ideas and trends that will shape the future of payments, banking and beyond.
