It’s a good idea to carry some foreign money in the currency of the country you're visiting to cover incidental expenses such as taxis, meals and tipping. (But remember; if you lose your foreign cash, it is gone and cannot be replaced. Never carry too much international currency on you at any one time.)
Foreign currency is convenient and can be readily used to purchase goods and services. If you know which countries you are going to visit, and want to plan ahead, you may want to purchase some foreign cash before you go. Foreign currency cash is charged at 1% of the AUD equivalent value for each currency purchased, with a minimum charge of AUD8 per currency.
Foreign Currency Conversion
When you return home, any accepted foreign currency notes can be converted back to Australian Dollars at any ANZ branch or ANZ Foreign Exchange Centre location1.
Please bring suitable photo identification, such as your passport, when exchanging your money.
Please note: Non-ANZ account holders are able to convert their foreign cash back into Australian dollars at ANZ branches where the value of the transaction is less than AUD1000. Conversions for the equivalent of AUD1000 and over must be made via an ANZ Foreign Exchange Centre.
