Supporting regional communities

A grant awarded under our Seeds of Renewal program has funded tablets to help young people living with disabilities improve their communication skills.

Adam, one of the participants, had rejected a range of complex communication devices in the past because they made him stand out and feel different from everyone else. After seeing how people respond to him using an iPad, Adam now uses one daily to support his communication.

“We live in a small country town so for Adam the social aspect was very valuable,” says Debbie, Adam’s mother. She says the iPad has been especially useful for helping Adam with his speech. He has been able to download apps to assist with his speech therapy exercises as well as numeracy and reading.

Due to the success of the Tech-Connect pilot, Spastic Centres of South Australia has broadened the program across their entire service and now has 87 iPads being used by clients across 13 hubs.

Since 2003, the Seeds of Renewal program has provided more than $3 million in grants to over 635 community projects. Funded by ANZ and independently administered by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), Seeds of Renewal aims to contribute to building thriving communities in regional Australia.
