Turn on automatic software updates

Set your software, operating system and apps to auto update to make sure you get the latest security features.

What are software updates?

Software updates often fix weaknesses in operating systems and software, including apps, which hackers use to access computers and mobile devices. So keeping everything up-to-date is one of the best ways to protect yourself.

Why is it important?

Malicious software can stop your computer from working, delete or corrupt files and/or allow cybercriminals to access your personal and confidential information. Additional good-quality security software can defend you by providing protection including virus scans, spam filtering, parental controls and preventing unwanted access.

External Resources

We're working every day to help keep you secure online, however it's also your responsibility to keep yourself secure. To help you, here are some suggestions of simple steps you can take to further improve your level of security.

  • Turn on auto updates for the operating system, software and apps on your computer and mobile devices to make sure you get the latest security features.
  • When you first install additional security software make sure you run a ‘full scan’ to detect any existing problems, then enable regular automatic scanning
  • If your security software cannot remove a virus, seek professional technical assistance
  • Make regular back-ups so you can recover your data if your files are deleted or damaged

No security software guarantees protection against unauthorised access or viruses and malicious software but it may improve the level of security on your computer or devices.
