Approximately two million Australians live alone. Sometimes it's a choice, while for others it may be the only option.

Choosing to live alone

Lots of people love to have their own sanctuary, a place where they can close the door to the hustle and bustle. That said, living alone is generally more expensive than living with friends or a partner.

You have the responsibility of managing the household yourself - at least you can do that as you like. Here are some things to consider:

  • Can you afford the rent or mortgage payments on your own?
  • Would you be better off renting part of your home to another person?
  • Are you and your possessions adequately insured?
  • What would happen to you if you lost your job or suffered an illness or injury and couldn't work?
Moving on from share housing

You've had enough of share housing, the mess, the noise from housemates, or you just want your own space. Whether renting or buying, you need to plan for the move to solo living and be confident it's going to suit your personality and your budget. It's certainly going to be more expensive, and you need to do your sums before making the move.
