ANZ offers American Express® Travellers Cheques, a widely recognised form of international currency that has the added protection of a global replacement service if the cheques are lost or stolen.
Used in conjunction with other forms of travel money, such as ANZ Travel Card, travellers cheques can give you peace of mind knowing you have a backup source of funds in an emergency.

Travellers cheques are a secure way to carry foreign currency. ANZ recommend you carry your travel funds in a variety of forms for your security, and to ensure access to your money when you need it.

How to buy travellers cheques
- ANZ Melbourne Airport and Sydney Airport Branches
Travellers cheques can be purchased on the spot by both ANZ and non-ANZ account holders. If you are not an ANZ customer please bring photo identification.
- ANZ branches
Travellers cheques of the equivalent of under AUD1000 can be ordered by both ANZ and non-ANZ account holders for collection within 2-3 business days. Travellers cheques of the equivalent of AUD1000 and over are only able to be ordered via an ANZ branch using an ANZ transaction account or an ANZ credit card account.
- ANZ Internet Banking and ANZ Phone Banking
Travellers cheques can be ordered using an ANZ transaction account online via the International Services tab in ANZ Internet Banking or via ANZ Phone Banking by calling 1800 352 535 (free call) in Australia, 8.00am to 8.00pm AEST, Monday to Friday. Travellers cheques ordered via these channels can be collected within 2-3 business days. Please bring your current driver’s licence or passport for identification.
What fees are involved?
Travellers cheques are charged at 1.1% of the total AUD equivalent value purchased, with a minimum charge of AUD13 per currency (0.1% of this charge is GST).
Loss or theft of your travellers cheques
If lost, stolen or destroyed, American Express® Travellers Cheques can generally be replaced within 24 hours almost anywhere in the world by American Express®.
Contact American Express® immediately if your travellers cheques are lost or stolen.
Travellers cheques retain their value until cashed and can be held indefinitely.
Please ensure you bring suitable photo identification, such as your passport, when exchanging your travellers cheques.
Note: Non-ANZ account holders are only able to convert their American Express® Travellers Cheques back into Australian dollars through ANZ branches where the value of the transaction is less than the equivalent of AUD1000. Conversions for this amount and over must be made via an ANZ Foreign Exchange Centre.
