ANZ Trustees manage an extensive range of scholarships and fellowship programs across Australia.

 

 

 

ANZ Trustees Queensland medical research grant program

The ANZ Trustees Queensland medical research grant program commenced in 2004 as a partnership of Queensland based philanthropic funders.  The objectives of the program are to:

  • Support excellence in medical scientific research in Queensland; and
  • Build medical research capacity in Queensland.

The program provides funding for:

  • ANZ Trustees PhD Scholarships in Medical Research, Queensland; and
  • ANZ Trustees Children’s Medical Research in Queensland Program (see separate guidelines).

Dafydd Lewis Trust

The Dafydd Lewis Trust continues to provide equity and merit-based scholarships to young men who might not have otherwise received a university education due to the limited financial resources of their parents.  Multiple scholarships are awarded every year for full-time degrees in most courses at any Victorian university.  Approximately 80 scholars are currently being supported by the trust.

Closing date: second Friday each December

Victorian Community Foundation - Felice Rosemary Lloyd Trust physiotherapy scholarships

The purpose of the trust is to further the development of the physiotherapy profession in Victoria through research and education, by providing annual scholarships that allow recipients to travel and study overseas.

Value

Each scholarship is up to $10,000. There may be one or more granted each year.

Eligibility

The scholarship is available to Victorian-based recent graduates of physiotherapy schools or professionals.  Grants can only be awarded to organisations with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status in Victoria and not to individuals.  Therefore scholarship applicants must apply through an organisation with which the applicant is associated.

Closing date: 1 October

Assessment

Applications are considered by the Victorian Community Foundation - Felice Rosemary Lloyd Trust sub-committee.  The sub-committee makes recommendations to ANZ Trustees, being the trustee of the trust. 

The sub-committee may like to meet with short listed applicants in November prior to awarding scholarships.  Applicants are advised by ANZ Trustees of the outcome of their application by the end of December each year.

Applicants should submit a detailed proposal including the names of places to be visited; the purposes of the research or experience, as well as an outline of the benefits which they anticipate will be obtained for physiotherapy in Victoria.  Applications should be on the appropriate application form below.

Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship Foundation

When Dafydd Lewis died in 1941 he left his estate to be held in perpetual trust, to provide scholarships for boys to attend full-time tertiary education.  The Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship Foundation, named in honour of Dafydd Lewis’ second wife, was created in 2004 by a group of passionate philanthropists to reflect the educational environment of today.  The Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship Foundation is structured on a similar basis to the Dafydd Lewis Trust. Equity and merit-based scholarships are awarded after consideration of a combination of an applicant's academic performance, a means and asset test applied to applicants and their parents, and an interview.  The key difference is that the Mary Jane Scholarship Foundation is restricted to young women commencing a degree at the University of Melbourne.  There are no restrictions on the degree course that scholarship recipients undertake.

Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation – Clinical Investigatorships

The Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation invites applications annually for Clinical Investigator awards of $60,000, given on a once-only basis.  The foundation hopes to offer five (5) awards in this category each year.  Full-time research fellows are not be eligible.

Eligible applicants will be medical graduates or graduates of other clinical disciplines who have completed both their clinical and research training which will normally be at doctoral level.  Applicants will be commencing their first definitive clinical position, or have been in such a post for no more than 24 months of the year of application. 

Closing date: 1 May

Assessment

A specially appointed medical advisory board recommends to the trustees the allocations of funding for each program.  Applicants are advised of the outcome of their application by the end of November.

Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation – Senior Medical Research Fellowships

The Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation invites applications annually for a five-year Senior Medical Research Fellowship valued at $195,000 per annum.  The trustees may award up to two fellowships each year at their discretion.  Applicants cannot hold another full-time salary grant.

Outstanding researchers who are medically qualified or graduates of another scientific discipline, with recognised postdoctoral achievements seeking to establish a research career in Australia and undertake research in an Australian academic institution, are eligible to apply whether or not they are currently working in Australia. Only Australian nationals or permanent residents are eligible for the awards.

The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation's medical program is listed as a compliant funding scheme on the Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR). The income higher education providers receive from such schemes listed on the ACGR is a metric used in driving the allocation of the Australian Government's Research Block Grants.
