The ANZ Banking Guide Made Easy for Students
Studying overseas will be one of life’s great adventures. But even great adventures need a lot of planning. You’ve probably got banking on the list, but are waiting to take care of it when you arrive in Australia or New Zealand. Let ANZ take care of it now. To help, we’ve not only put together this guide, but a simple process to help you gets set up.
A few things to consider now.
For secure peace of mind you probably don’t want to take a large amount of cash with you or carry it around when you get there. If your original plan was to take an Indonesian debit or credit card with you, what will you do if your cards are lost or stolen? And if you intend working Down Under, then your employer will almost certainly want to pay you by domestic funds transfer. Obviously the solution to these potential issues is an Australia or New Zealand bank account. So here’s a plan:
A month before you leave Indonesia.
* Before you arrive in Australia or New Zealand, your account will be opened “inactive”. This means that the account can receive transfers and deposits, but you cannot make withdrawals until you arrive in Australia or New Zealand and are properly identified according to banking regulations.
† Accounts can only be opened if you intend to arrive in Australia or New Zealand within 1 month of submitting your account opening form. If you won’t be arriving in this time, we’ll hold the account opening form until you advise us when you’ll be leaving.
When you arrive in Australia or New Zealand.
Once you arrive Down Under you’ll need to visit your ANZ branch to be identified and have your new bank account activated for withdrawals. At the time ANZ will verify your identity by reviewing certain identity documents such as your original passport and your student visa. Please remember to take these documents with you to the branch. At the same time, we’ll order your debit card and if you wish register you for ANZ Phone and Internet Banking and answer any other questions you might have.
The bank account we’ll open for you in Australia is an ANZ Access Advantage Account and, in New Zealand, an ANZ Student Account. Both accounts will have account servicing fee waived, and you get unlimited free withdrawals from ANZ ATMs, EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale), once registered, ANZ Phone and Internet Banking (To be eligible for student discounts you must present your Australia or New Zealand Student Card when activating your account, or as soon as you have it)
If you are 18 years or over, you might also be interested in opening an ANZ Everyday Visa Debit Card. This gives you access to your money plus the convenience of access to Visa. If you are a full time tertiary student you are also eligible for a 50% discount on the monthly fee.
