    Mean

In the arithmetic sense, an alternative for 'average'. The arithmetic mean is arrived at by dividing a total by the number of its components; if ten pairs of shoes cost $800, then the mean cost is $80. The geometric mean is the nth root of the product of a series of numbers; this is used to calculate rates of growth of, say, bank deposits.
