Banking in Australia

Banks when and where you need them

Australia is a world leader in providing access to banking services. Australia's banks can provide you with access to your money 24-hours a day, seven days a week, with almost 500,000 banking service outlets including branches and Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs), electronic funds transfer (EFTPOS) and Australia Post agencies. Indeed, the majority of Australians live just a few minutes away from their nearest bank branch.

And, while cash can still be used to make purchases, increasingly Australians are taking advantage of newer more convenient services, such as EFTPOS, telephone and Internet banking. You can now even find banking services in some supermarkets. .

Fast, safe online services and a large branch network mean many customers can do their banking with confidence from their home, place or work or even whilst on holidays.

The Australian central bank is the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The RBA formulates Australia's monetary policy, issues Australian currency and serves as banker to the Australian Government. Banking is done using the national currency, the Australian dollar (AUD). Most banks are listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and are also regulated by the Australia Securities Investment Commission (ASIC) and Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA).
