Our History

ANZ was established in 1835. On top of being a major bank in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific, ANZ is also one of only 11 AA rated banks and rated among the world's safest banks3.

ANZ has more than six million customers, along with assets of USD$438 billion4. ANZ has emerged from the global financial crisis in a position of strength, remaining profitable and well-capitalised. In its 2009 Annual Results released on 29 October, ANZ reported an underlying profit5 of USD$3.47 billion for the year ended 30 September 2009.

ANZ in Asia

Our Presence

ANZ is traditionally Australia's most international bank, with a presence in Asia dating back 40 years. ANZ has operated in Hong Kong since 1970; in Indonesia since 1973; in Singapore since 1974; in Taiwan since 1980; in the Philippines since 1990; and in Vietnam since 1993.

Our Management

ANZ senior management has many years of banking experience in Asia, including ANZ CEO Mike Smith who joined ANZ in 2007 and is the former CEO of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.

Our Growth

ANZ is investing in Asia, opening new branches and offices across the region. In 2009 ANZ has added 17 new branches and 1,000 new employees to its Asia Pacific network, taking the total number of employees within the region to over 5,700. ANZ have a significant and growing presence in Asia, with a network of offices including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and India.

Our Strategy

As part of the strategy to grow in Asia, ANZ agreed with The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (RBS) in August 2009 to acquire the retail, wealth and commercial businesses which are part of ABN AMRO Bank N.V. in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia as well as its institutional businesses in Taiwan, the Philippines and Vietnam.

ANZ in Hong Kong

ANZ opened its Hong Kong office in 1970. Hong Kong is one of ANZ's two regional hubs, offering corporate, commercial and retail banking, as well as domestic and foreign currency lending, private banking, wealth management, foreign exchange and trade finance.

Hong Kong is ANZ's hub for North East Asia regional business, which includes mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea.

Today ANZ has five branches in Hong Kong.
