ANZ's Corporate Centre functions take a group-wide approach, working across all divisions to support ANZ’s strategic priorities. Each functional head is a direct report of the Group CEO.


Risk is responsible for ANZ's global risk management framework. Risk is responsible for the organisation's risk strategies, policies, processes and reporting. The approach at ANZ is to ensure risk management and accountability are central to everything we do. Risk enables ANZ to meet its performance objectives along with delivering a 'no surprises' approach for management and the external market.


Finance is responsible for the overall financial management of the ANZ Group including control of the structure of ANZ's balance sheet, finance management information systems and performance management. Finance comprises Financial Reporting and Policy, Business Performance, General Counsel & Company Secretary's Office, Taxation, Treasury and Investor Relations and the Divisional finance teams. Finance is also responsible for ANZ’s business strategy, including the expansion and re-shaping of ANZ’s businesses, mergers, acquisitions and disposals, as well as overseeing the Group’s strategic productivity agenda.

Marketing, Innovation and Digital

Marketing, Innovation and Digital is responsible for ANZ's global branding positioning, marketing, innovation and digital strategies.

Human Resources

Human Resources' mission is to deliver the best opportunities, the best leaders and the best company. It is responsible for ANZ's strategic HR function including the major practice areas of remuneration and rewards, employee relations, culture and change, transformation and operations, organisational capability and HR shared services.

Corporate Affairs

Corporate Affairs supports achievement of ANZ's goals by responding to and shaping our operating environment. It manages key external issues and relationships, particularly those involving civil society, government, regulators, NGOs and other stakeholders who play a role in influencing our world. This role includes leadership and governance of ANZ's Corporate Responsibility (CR) agenda.

Gerard Brown is Group General Manager, Corporate Affairs, reporting to ANZ CEO Mike Smith.  

In this role he is responsible for the bank’s relationships with government and civil society and the identification and management of the social, environmental, political and public policy issues shaping our operating environment.

This includes supporting the group’s Asia growth strategy through trade policy advocacy - both country specific market access strategies and multilateral engagement to support services sector trade liberalization.

Gerard also leads and guides implementation of the Group’s Corporate Responsibility strategy, governance and reporting; this work has seen ANZ assessed as the leading bank globally on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since 2006.

Previous positions held by Gerard at ANZ include Head of the Office of the CEO and General Manager of Government and Regulatory Affairs.  Gerard joined ANZ in 1999 from the Allen Consulting Group, a public policy, regulatory economics and external affairs management consulting firm, where he was a Principal.

Gerard holds a Master of Arts (Syd.) and a Bachelor of Letters (Melb.) in history. He is a former Director of the Consumer Action Law Centre and the Australian Banking Industry Ombudsman scheme

Office of the CEO

The Office of the CEO is responsible for Mr Smith's office and oversight of group initiatives, operations and issues. This includes ANZ Board meetings, Management Board meetings, senior management forums and review processes across the group.

Jo is the Chief of Staff to the ANZ CEO Mike Smith. She is responsible for running the CEO’s office and has oversight of Group initiatives, operations and issues. This includes Board meetings, Management Board meetings, senior management forums and review processes across the Group.

Previously, Jo was Head of Commercial Sales & Service Centre, leading a large contact centre supporting our Corporate and Commercial customers.

During her 20-year career at ANZ, Jo has held a number of executive roles chiefly leading large frontline sales and operational teams. Her banking experience spans lending, branch, operations, enablement, marketing and risk.

Jo holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Economics) from University of NSW.

Corporate Communications

Corporate Communications has internal and external communication responsibilities for the ANZ Group including media relations and internal communication.

The team ensures that our people have the information they need to understand, engage in and make a positive contribution to ANZ's vision and priorities. It seeks to create an open and honest communication environment where feedback is encouraged. Externally, Corporate Communications is responsible for all contact between ANZ and the media.

Paul Edwards is Group General Manager Corporate Communications reporting to ANZ Chief Executive Officer Mike Smith.  Paul is the senior communications advisor at ANZ where he has worked since 1996.  He leads a team of 70 communications professionals globally with responsibility for media relations, social media and internal communications.  He is also the principal speech writer for ANZ’s Chairman and the Group Chief Executive Officer.

Paul graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Economics and started his career as an economist including roles as an industry policy advisor with the Australian Government.  He has worked in corporate communications for the past 25 years with experience in consultancy, industry associations and in major companies Australia and the United Kingdom. Paul is also a Director of the ANZ Staff Superannuation Fund.
