Our approach

Supporting the communities in which we do business

We provide our employees, customers and shareholders with opportunities to support causes that are important to them through our Community Giving program in Australia, New Zealand, India and Fiji. We also support the community through the ANZ Staff Foundation which is supported by both Australian and New Zealand staff.

Community Giving

Staff

Our employees in Australia, New Zealand, India and Fiji can make contributions to any of our nominated charity partners through regular payroll deductions. ANZ matches each employee contribution dollar-for-dollar up to A$1,000 or INR2,500.

Customers

The ANZ Customer Donations Program provides internet banking customers in Australia with a convenient and simple way to donate to charity. Using our Pay Anyone function, we facilitate direct donations to a range of charities. In 2011, more than $460,000 was donated to charity by our customers.

How to donate
  1. Login to Internet Banking and Pay Anyone.
  2. Select ‘Donate to over 30 Charities’ which appears underneath your account details on the ‘View Accounts’ page.
  3. Read about the program, then select ‘Continue’ at the bottom of the page.
  4. Following the normal Pay Anyone process, nominate an account, select a charity, and enter the amount you wish to donate. Please note that recurring payments are not available.
  5. After authorising the transaction, print the lodgement receipt for tax purposes.
  6. The donations will be sent directly to the charity as an immediate Pay Anyone transaction.

Shareholders

Our Shareholder Dividend Charity Donation Program gives ANZ shareholders the opportunity to donate some or all of their cash dividends to one of our shareholder community partners. In 2011, more than $78,000 in dividends was donated by our shareholders through this program.

The Shareholder Dividend Charity Donation Program is open to all shareholders who are Australian-resident taxpayers and who receive a cash dividend in Australian dollars.

2011 results

Employee participation in our payroll giving programs in Australia, New Zealand and India was 11%, against a target of 15%.

We conducted a review of our workplace giving program in Australia during 2011,  including a staff survey which asked staff to nominate their preferred charities for the program.  Our goal is to refresh the program, to ensure it aligns with our Corporate Responsibility framework and to increase staff participation. A revamped program will be launched in 2012.

According to the London Benchmarking Group methodology, ANZ leveraged $25.8 million in donations from customers and staff in 2011.  This included significant donations to numerous disaster appeals during the year.

The future

In 2012, we plan to make some changes to the Australian workplace giving program based on the results of our review and the staff survey.

The future

In 2010, we engaged our staff across our region in a review of our community investment program to ensure that it responds to the needs of our staff and allows them to contribute to the community in ways that are important to them and have a lasting impact for the community.

In the 2011, we will apply the learning from this review.
