Commercial and Agri

Duration: 24 month program (4 x 6 month rotations)

About Commercial and Agri

The Commercial Agri business provides a full range of banking solutions to a wide range of business and Agri customers across the country. It has a focus on building strong relationships with its clients to understand their business goals and provide access to a range of specialists to deliver appropriate business solutions.

Commercial customers are predominantly privately-owned businesses with an annual turnover of between $2M to $250M. Our Agri customers have business limits greater than $500,000 and total farm income will typically exceed $250,000.

As a relationship-driven business we have relationship banking teams based across the country. Being close to our customers and understanding their local markets and economies means we are strongly positioned to support their growth and on-going success.

Alongside our relationship teams, we have teams dedicated to Property Finance and UDC Finance, Trade Finance and Transactional Banking. Supporting these teams are Relationship Services & Business Management and Business Strategy. We also work closely with our Institutional product partners, Business and Private Banking.

Whether working in the frontline or in a head office support role, our team aims to provide relevant business insights to our customers, provide access to our network of people throughout the wider ANZ Group and make it simpler and easier for our customers to achieve their business and personal goals.

Who makes a good Commercial & Agri Graduate at ANZ?

Our ANZ Commercial & Agri graduates are all-rounders with good technical and personal skills. Successful people within the Commercial & Agri business have strong relationship building and communication skills. They are proactive and committed, willingly take on challenging assignments, and collaborate with their colleagues across Commercial and Agri and other areas of the Bank. They understand how a business operates, how to structure appropriate banking solutions and are able to articulate our customer proposition of being Connected Insightful and Easy to do business with.

For this reason, our best Commercial & Agri graduates have generally had some previous experience in a customer facing role, even in a part-time capacity. They are individuals who build and maintain relationships in a business environment, forming key networks to appropriately deliver solutions to customers. Team work is also an essential ingredient for success. Ideally our graduates have a base level of understanding when it comes to the principles behind how a business or farm financially operates.

Retail and Business Banking

Referred to as ‘the face of the bank’ Retail & Business Banking is the largest division of ANZ and where the majority of customers come into contact with us. We offer customers access to the most Banking Specialists of any other bank in New Zealand through our Branches, Business and Contact Centres, and Specialist Distribution.

In Retail & Business Banking the frontline do this by truly understanding the needs and aspirations of our customers, giving them great service and providing them with financial solutions to help them achieve more.

That’s why we provide an 18 month Retail & Business Banking Graduate Programme, consisting of three six-month placements across the Retail & Business Banking division. This gives you a comprehensive overview of Retail & Business Banking and is a great way for you and your managers to evaluate your future career path with us.

As the core of the Retail & Business Banking business is our Branch and Business Banking Network and Contact Centre, at least one of your three rotations will be in the frontline of our business. Each Retail & Business Banking graduate will experiences rotations. The areas in which you spend your rotations will be decided by many factors such as projects of interest, your capability and strengths, as well as vacancies.

Each rotation will see you introduced to ANZ products, people and policies plus you’ll be given plenty of opportunity to network and learn from your peers and stakeholders. Retail, Business Operations and Shared Services

Duration: 18 month program (3 x 6 month rotation)

About Retail, Business Operations and Shared Services

Retail & Business Operations is at the heart of ANZ’s Retail and Business Banking brands in NZ, helping our stakeholders support customers to achieve their financial aspirations. The key functions in Operations include assessing lending applications, processing loans, transaction and account processing as well as detecting fraud.

Operations is part of a broader Business Unit called GTSO (Global Technology, Services and Operations) and the Retail & Business Operations team works closely with the Services and Technology teams to deliver our business strategy. As well as exposure to Operations, you would also have the opportunity to work with the Technology and Shared Services teams as part of your day to day work or as rotations.

Shared Services includes teams that are responsible for HR Operations – Recruitment, Advisory, Payroll and Training, Global Sourcing and accounts payable, Property Management as well as business analysis, driving process improvement and project management and change management.

The ANZ graduate program offers the chance to rotate within Operations and Shared Services, as well as links and exposure to Technology, Wealth Operations and Institutional & Commercial Operations to gain a real breadth of experience across the key areas of GTSO.

Who makes a good Retail Operations and Shared Services Graduate at ANZ?

Our ANZ Operations and Shared Services graduates have a focus on the big picture. They are inquisitive about the internal processes that affect the broader ANZ workforce and are keen to be involved in improving and implementing new ways of doing things. People within the Operations and Shared Services division have a methodical approach to their work, understanding that streamlined processes drive quality projects and deliver the right outcomes for our customers.

Some of our best graduates usually have had some work experience in customer service, combined with a proven ability to problem solve. Finance

Duration: 24 month program (4 x 6 month rotations)

About Finance

The Finance Graduate Program exists across the entire finance function within ANZ to give a well rounded understanding of its operations. This area of the bank is somewhat unique as it touches every division of the broader ANZ business while supporting and influencing so much of what we do each day.

Finance is a global enablement function that aims to drive financial performance by shaping strategy, allocating resources and ensuring decisions are based on facts.

The Finance Operating Model represents the way in which Finance operates to deliver value added services to its customers and categorizes the function into:

Enabling - A critical role of Finance is providing analysis, insight and partnering to drive performance. Enablement functions are made up of Business Partners and Financial Planning and Analysis teams.

Control - A critical part of Finance is to ensure the integrity of the numbers so that we preserve our independence - that’s part of being a control function complying with our reporting requirements. The Control function comprises Financial Control and Specialist Services like Tax, Governance and Project Accounting.

The Business Partner, Financial Planning and Analysis, Financial Control and Specialist Services play an integral role in Finance’s Operating Model. Supported by systems and hub services, and governed by leadership and management.

Who makes a good Accounting Graduate at ANZ?

Successful ANZ Accounting graduates are essentially Accounting enthusiasts! Our Accounting graduates are passionate about working for an area of the bank that is influential in finding financial solutions for internal and external customers.

The best fit for the Accounting program are people with excellent quantitative analysis skills. Strong capability in understanding and interpreting financial information and an understanding of financial business concepts and practice are highly regarded, but it’s not all about numbers!

We also look for graduates with a knack for being able to translate and communicate their work and their solutions to non-technical audiences as well as key stakeholders within the bank.

Having a big picture view of banking and finance will assist your success in this area by considering who and what your work will affect. High levels of adaptability/flexibility and a willingness to deal with constant change and challenges will set the scene for success!

Our Accounting program is highly sought after by graduates with a passion for Accounting, so high achievers both academically and in other areas of life outside university are looked upon favourably by our leaders in this area of the bank.

Students who are studying, or have completed majors in the following areas with consistently high level grades will fit well into an Accounting role: Accounting, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, Econometrics, Business, Commerce or Business Law (including Risk Management).

Risk

Duration: 18 month program (3 x 6 month rotation)

About Risk

Risk is responsible for ANZ's global risk management framework. It takes care of the organisation's risk strategies, policies, processes and reporting while maintaining a strong customer focus. The approach at ANZ is to ensure risk management is everyone’s responsibility and central to everything we do. Risk enables ANZ to meet its performance objectives along with delivering a 'no surprises' approach for management and the external market.

There are several different areas of Risk that our graduates may be exposed to during their time on the program. These include:

  • Commercial and Rural Credit
  • Institutional Credit
  • Market Risk
  • Retail Risk
  • Portfolio Provisioning and Reporting
  • Operational Risk and Compliance.

The Risk Graduate program is unique as given the breadth of the Risk function it exposes graduates to the entire bank developing valuable knowledge and bank-wide networks.

Who makes a good Risk Graduate at ANZ?

Successful ANZ Risk graduates are highly motivated to work in risk management and/or the banking industry. Their drive and ambition has enabled them to benefit from some amazing opportunities in both New Zealand and overseas. ANZ Global Wealth helps our customers grow their wealth and protect their assets by providing advice, investment and insurance solutions tailored to their needs.

In New Zealand, ANZ Global Wealth’s business comprises Funds Management, Insurance and Private Wealth and provides investment, superannuation (including KiwiSaver) and insurance solutions which are distributed through bank, and external financial adviser and insurance broker channels. Its advisory services include Private Banking for customers across Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

As an I&IC Operations Graduate you will have exposure to a high performing network of specialists dedicated to delivering the promise of our brand and supporting the nation’s largest corporations and financial institutions, both in New Zealand and offshore.

ANZ I&C Operations operates across the breadth of segments within ANZ (Institutional, Commercial, Agri, Business Banking and Retail) – delivering and servicing Institutional products and wholesale lending. We work closely with our business partners and form part of the wider Global Technology Services & Operations (GTSO) division.

What to expect in the Graduate Program:

Who makes a good Technology Graduate at ANZ?

If you're a Technology graduate at ANZ, you will be multi skilled! You’ll have fantastic technical ability as well as great people skills. Working with others is something you enjoy and do well, and you are a team player who can also execute tasks independently.

Ideally you will be the type of person who has a focus on the big picture and a genuine interest in how you can contribute to Technology at ANZ in a broad sense. Understanding how technology supports and shapes the way we do business, for our customers and for our business partners, is something you will need to grasp early on to be successful in this function. You may have had some exposure to this already either through part-time work or on projects at university which will be beneficial. You are an individual who appreciates the significance of information technology in business and are passionate about providing service delivery to the highest standards.

Candidate Requirements

Students who are currently studying or have completed degrees such as the following may be suitably skilled for our Technology area: Bachelor of Information Technology; Bachelor of Business Information Systems, or degrees in the following areas that have included IT subjects, preferably majors: Business/Commerce/Management, Engineering, Science, Arts/Humanities. Also if you have an interest in Risk & Control, procurement management and financial management our Technology program may be right for you.
